Meghan Markle's joke Christmas gift for Prince William is really hilarious

By Cosmopolitan

The royal family may have to appear quite serious on the outside, but in private they are just normal people (with butlers, private trains and tiaras, of course), and that means they can poke fun at each other with funny gifts at Christmas too.

When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement in November 2017, it was decided to welcome Meghan into the royal family immediately. Breaking tradition, the former actress was invited to spend Christmas with the royals at Sandringham – a privilege usually reserved for married couples. And it seems she's fit in perfectly, having adopted the festive family tradition of buying each other fun gifts and exchanging them on Christmas Eve.

To give you an idea of how fun these gifts are, rumor has it that Kate Middleton bought Prince Harry a “Grow Your Own Girlfriend” kit years ago when he was still single. Yes, I'm having great visions of how well the Queen would have received that.

But back to Meghan. According to an unauthorized biography of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Finding Freedom, she was tasked with, among other things, buying a gag gift for Prince William in her first year, and in my opinion, she handled the task perfectly.

“Meghan's biggest challenge was finding the perfect original gifts to entertain her new extended family,” royal correspondents Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote in the biography. “At least one of her gifts was a huge hit – a spoon for William with 'Cereal Killer' embossed on the flat end.”

Just perfect.

According to Scobie and Durand, the pressure to buy the right gifts was also great. They wrote that it was essentially “an audition like no other, and [Meghan] wanted to impress her future royal relatives.”

I wonder what Meghan and Harry will send their royal relatives for Christmas this year. A supply of toilet paper? A bauble shaped like a germ?

Who knows, but we could probably all use a little cheering up this year with some fun gifts…
