A24 presents full season of Adjani Salmon's BBC Three web comedy

euphoria Producer A24 is on board to co-produce and distribute a full season of the acclaimed BBC Three comedy Dreaming while black.

The commission follows an award-winning pilot last year and four years after creator Adjani Salmon released his original short series of the same name online via the BBC. The series will air in 2023 and will be distributed internationally by indie film studio A24.

The producer of the pilot, Big Deal Films (coconut, Holier than thou) is co-producing the six-part series, which comes from Salmon, whose pilot last year won him a BAFTA Craft Award for Emerging Talent: Fiction and the Royal Television Society's 2022 Breakthrough Award, among others. The series is adapted from Salmon and Ali Hughes' web series, which launched on BBC Three in 2018, when it was still an online-only service.

Freely inspired by true events, Dreaming while black follows aspiring filmmaker Kwabena (Salmon) in and out of reality as he tries to make it in “Babylon.” The synopsis states: “The problem is that he's broke, black and born into a Jamaican family that wishes he was an accountant.”

“When we did the web series, we wanted to be 'di best ting pon di intanet,'” said Salmon. “With all the support we have now, we want to be 'di best ting pon BBC TV,' pun intended.”

Tanya Qureshi, Head of Comedy at the BBC, said: “We're sure it will come as no surprise that BBC Comedy wanted to make this wonderful project into a series. Its success and acclaim speaks for itself. That it has found such a strong partner in A24 is testament to the work of Big Deal Films and co-writers Adjani and Ali. We can't wait to bring the series to UK audiences next year.”

Co-Executive Producer Dhanny Joshi, Managing Director of Big Deal Films, said: “The response we have received from viewers who have repeatedly Dreaming while black “The pilot episode has been one of the most rewarding experiences we've ever had. Hearing viewers say the show made them feel 'seen' has been inspiring and we're so grateful to the team at BBC Comedy and A24 for making the series possible.”

Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy Commissioning, and Fiona Campbell, Controller of BBC Three, have ordered the series. Executive producers are Joshi, Thomas Stogdon and Salmon, and the series is directed by Jermain Julien and Joelle Mae David. Producer is Nicola Gregory and commissioning editor is Qureshi.

The original web series was created by Salmon, Max Evans, Laura de Sousa Seixas and Natasha Jatania of 4 Quarters Films.

Strategic advice and commercial support was provided by former BBC advertising chief Bal Samra of Bizet Media, an investor in Big Deal. CAA represents Big Deal in the US and brokered the partnership with A24.
