Man arrested for impersonating Sioux City police officer in Christmas robbery

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – A man who posed as a Sioux City Police officer during a planned robbery in 2023 has been arrested.

According to court documents, Wiley Spencer was charged with first-degree robbery for stealing $3,000 to $4,000 from a Sioux City man.

Documents state that on December 25, 2023, the victim went to a 7th Avenue apartment with three other people to purchase THC cartridges. The victim kept his money in a ziplock bag that some of the others knew about.

Documents state that the victim went into the garage of the residence with the other people when Spencer allegedly came in and said he was from the Sioux City Police Department and to get on the ground.

The victim was struck several times with a blunt object and then taken to the street where the attack continued. Documents indicate that during the attack, the victim's money was taken before he was able to escape.

Documents show that the victim was taken to hospital with a severe laceration to his head that required staples.

The investigation revealed that Spencer and some of the other people had allegedly planned a plot to steal the money from the victim.

Witnesses reported seeing Spencer's vehicle in the area at the time of the incident. Witnesses also reported Spencer's vehicle picking up people who were present at the time of the robbery.

An arrest warrant was executed and Spencer was arrested on August 2 on $35,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 13.
