Gerald Dickens brings “A Christmas Carol” to life at the Historic Park Theatre

Gerald Dickens, great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, brings his one-man adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” to the Historic Park Theatre & Event Center in Cranston, Rhode Island on December 2 at 7:30 p.m.

The performance ushers in the holiday season with Dickens' spirited take on his ancestor's classic tale. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. August 9 and range in price from $29 to $59.

Dickens has captivated audiences in Nashua since 2009 with his unique take on the beloved Christmas story. His adaptation brings 26 characters to life through their distinctive mannerisms and voices.

“During his performance, Gerald jumps, sobs and laughs, captivating you as he portrays 26 characters from Dickens' timeless story,” a theater spokesman said.

The Historic Park Theatre & Event Center, just 5 miles from downtown Providence, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024. The recently renovated venue now features a fully equipped, multi-purpose performing arts center with seating for approximately 1,000 attendees.

The theater has hosted notable artists in the past, including Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Buddy Guy, Ann Wilson, Spyro Gyra, The Beach Boys, and Ani DiFranco. It is also home to the Rhode Island Comedy Hall of Fame.

This performance of A Christmas Carol offers audiences the chance to experience the classic story in a fresh and exciting way. Gerald Dickens' adaptation breathes new life into the well-known characters Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim.

The one-man show format presents a unique challenge for the performer, as Dickens must seamlessly switch between characters and maintain the narrative flow. His ability to play multiple roles demonstrates his versatility as an actor and his deep connection to the source material.

Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol has been a staple of the Christmas story since its publication in 1843. The story's themes of redemption, compassion and generosity continue to resonate with audiences of all ages.

Gerald Dickens' adaptation stays true to the core of the original story while adding his own theatrical flair. His performance style allows audiences to experience the story in a more intimate and immediate way than traditional stage or film adaptations.
