A journey of love and salvation

August is National Dog Month, a time when we celebrate our furry friends and recognize their efforts to make their lives better. Launched in 2020 by dog treat company Milk-Bone, this month-long celebration is designed to raise awareness of the needs and joys of our four-legged companions. As an animal lover and radio DJ, I have had the privilege of participating in various initiatives to support and promote dog adoption and canine welfare in Abilene, Texas.

Living in Abilene and all of West Texas, we are familiar with high temperatures. The mercury often rises above 100 degrees, causing that our pets are well cared for is crucial. This National Dog Month, I want to share a few personal stories and highlight the importance of taking care of our dogs, especially during these hot summer months.

One of my most memorable experiences was spending 48 hours in a kennel at an Abilene dog shelter. Yes, you read that right! I ate, drank, and slept in a tiny kennel at the Abilene dog shelter to raise money for dog beds and food. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we raised nearly $20,000. Another unforgettable experience was when I lived in a dog kennel on the corner of Southwest Drive and Catclaw Drive for three days. This was part of a dog adoption and fundraiser for Rescue the Animals and the Abilene Animal Shelter.

I also recently had the opportunity to rescue some feral cats from the local hospital, which further solidified my commitment to animal welfare. But dogs have a special place in my heart, and this year, instead of the usual flowers and chocolates for Valentine's Day, I surprised my wife with a golden retriever named Jane that I adopted from the All Kind Animal Shelter in Abilene. Jane has brought so much joy and energy to our home and is a great companion to Princess, my daughter's therapy dog.

Dogs have the incredible ability to improve our lives by providing companionship, joy, and even therapy. As we celebrate National Dog Month, let's not forget the dogs out there suffering in the heat. Make sure they have plenty of water, shade, and love. If you see a dog in need, don't hesitate to take action.

Let's make National Dog Month not only a time of celebration, but also a time of compassion and care for our furry friends. After all, they give us everything; it's only right that we do the same for them.
