Glitter could be taboo this Christmas

From Harper's BAZAAR

Christmas may not be quite as glittery this year, but there's a good reason for that.

Morrisons, Waitrose and John Lewis will not use glitter in their own-brand Christmas products this Christmas due to environmental concerns. The plastics used to make glitter are harmful to the environment and wildlife and this move aims to reduce the negative impact.

Christine Bryce, Morrisons store manager, said: “Every time a cracker is pulled or a card is opened, plastic is used… but only once.”

“That's why we've removed glitter and plastic from our holiday range this year so our customers can enjoy their holidays without worrying about the environmental impact.”

The move reflects a larger shift in the retail industry, where other companies are also becoming more environmentally friendly.

Boots is eliminating single-use plastic packaging from its Christmas gifts, which the BBC says is equivalent to 2,000 tonnes of plastic, Asda is launching a sustainable Christmas range and Tesco is using only edible glitter.

Approximately four to twelve million tonnes of plastic waste end up in the oceans each year, where it breaks down into smaller pieces that are ingested by wildlife, often with harmful and/or fatal consequences.
