Kate Bosworth plays a soldier trapped at sea in a dystopian war in the exciting trailer for “Last Sentinel”

Kate Bosworth embarks on a dangerous mission in the trailer for the futuristic war film Last Guardian.

Vertical Entertainment shared the official trailer for director Tanel Toom’s upcoming film exclusively with PEOPLE on Tuesday.

Last Guardian follows a war between humans on Earth's only two remaining continents in 2063. The film's story revolves around Bosworth and a small group of soldiers stationed at sea who find themselves in conflict when their mission ends – without reinforcements arriving.

When Bosworth and the other soldiers – played by Lucien Laviscount (Emily in Paris), Thomas Kretschmann (Infinity pool) and Martin McCann (The informant) – protecting a radioactive weapon at their only remaining outpost in the ocean, an unmanned ship reaches their outpost.

The arrival of the ship causes the group to doubt their mission and their loyalty to each other, as the trailer suggests, while one soldier (Kretschmann) seems to turn against the rest of the unit and the sea level continues to rise.

Last Guardian is set in a “near future” where only two of the Earth's continents remain above sea level after “unchecked and rampant climate change” has killed billions of people, according to an official synopsis for the film. Bosworth's soldier and the other members of her unit patrol a lonely ocean outpost and “defend their homeland from invasion by an enemy they have never seen.”

“Alone and unsure of what fate awaits them, the simmering tension among the crew escalates when a mysterious boat comes within reach,” the synopsis reads. “Is it the help they've been waiting for, or something far more sinister?”

Peter Jarowey, partner at Vertical Entertainment, said in a statement that the film “incredibly immerses the viewer in the horrific, desolate conditions of this watchtower where the crew is trapped but still refuses to leave.”

“The chaos of being stranded at sea is as terrifying as it is beautiful in its portrayal, and each character delivers the performance of a lifetime,” Jarowey adds. “Audiences will be gripped from start to finish.”

The film's screenplay was written by Malachi Smyth. Director Toom was already nominated for his short film at the 83rd Oscars in 2011. The confession.

Last Guardian will be in cinemas on March 24th.
