Violent crime in Wichita increased slightly, but murders and rapes decreased

WICHITA, Kansas (KWCH) – According to statistics released Tuesday by Wichita police, violent crime in the city is up slightly from last year, but murders and rapes are down.

The reason for the overall increase is the number of robberies and aggravated assaults. In 2024, 264 robberies and 2,419 aggravated assaults were reported, compared to 257 and 2,307, respectively, in the same period last year.

The number of murders has fallen by 20 percent, from 25 to 20, and the number of rapes has fallen by 28 percent. The number of violent crimes has fallen slightly this year compared to the five-year average.

The number of property thefts has also increased, mainly due to the sharp increase in car thefts: up to August 11 last year there were 1,249, and this year there are already 1,436. There has also been a slight increase in burglaries and thefts, resulting in an overall increase in property crimes of 5 percent.
