Penguin's showrunner says she saw the series as an opportunity to evolve the crime genre with more complex female characters

The upcoming Batman spin-off “The Penguin” will not only expand and develop director Matt Reeves’ vision for Gotham City, but will also leave its mark on the crime genre.

“Very few women have been able to write these kinds of films or television shows,” showrunner Lauren LeFranc tells Total Film in our new issue, out Thursday, August 15, which features Beetlejuice on the cover.
