Jung Yoo-jung

A young woman obsessed with true crime who killed and dismembered a tutor “out of curiosity” will spend the rest of her life behind bars, a judge ruled.

23-year-old Jung Yoo-jung was sentenced to life imprisonment in South Korea on Friday, BBC, Korea JoongAng Daily and The Korea Times.

Yoo-jung was arrested in June in connection with the premeditated murder of a tutor she met online. The Chosun Ilbo was reported at the time. Police said they had hatched an elaborate plan to meet and kill the woman to “see what it was like.”

“Jung deliberately planned the crime because she wanted to kill someone after developing an obsession with murder through television shows and books,” a police spokesman said. The Chosun Ilbo.

According to the source, investigators said Yoo-jung posed as a mother on a tutoring app looking for someone to teach her daughter English.

She found the victim after contacting 54 people – mostly women – via the app. She arrived at the woman's home disguised as a young student and wearing a school uniform, the news agency reports.

“Jung is small and since she is wearing the uniform, the victim probably thought she was a middle school student,” the police spokesman said. The Chosun Ilbo.

After entering the victim's apartment, Yoo-jung stabbed her multiple times. She then went to a supermarket where she bought trash cans and bleach before returning to the apartment and dismembering her, the police spokesman added.

According to BBC, Yoo-jung then took a taxi to dispose of some of the body parts in the forest, and the driver then alerted the police to her suspicious behavior. Parts of the body were discovered in the forest, while other body parts were found in Yoo-jung's house. The Chosun Ilbo reports.

According to BBC reports, police also said her browser history showed that she had been searching for ways to kill and dispose of a body in the months before the murder.

She was arrested and convicted of murder, desecration of corpses and disposal of bodies, Korea JoongAng Daily reports. In addition to her sentence, she must wear a tracking device for 30 years.

On Friday, the Busan District Court judge said Yoo-jung committed the murder “even though he did not know her beforehand for her own perverse reasons,” according to the outlet.

They also said the crime had fuelled “a general sense of mistrust” in South Korean society, the BBC reports.

According to the BBC, the victim, whose identity was never made public, was 26 years old.
