A woman, her unborn baby and her mother were killed in an accident in north Queensland when the car they were travelling in ended up on the wrong side of a road.

A man in his 30s was driving a Nissan Navara on the rural Shute Harbour Road in Mount Marlow, near Airlie Beach, when the car crossed into the path of an oncoming Toyota Landcruiser at about 1.06pm on Sunday.

“For unknown reasons, the vehicle ended up on the wrong side of the road and collided with a Toyota Landcruiser travelling in the opposite direction,” said Deputy Inspector Mitch Benson.

“Unfortunately, two women tragically lost their lives in this crash.”

The two male drivers were flown to Townsville Hospital in critical condition.

Another man and two women in the Landcruiser suffered various non-life-threatening injuries.

Benson said there was “fairly severe weather” at the time of the accident, with rain and water on the road. This will be part of the investigation.
