State Highway Patrol investigates morning crash with injuries on I-475 exit ramp to US 23 – BG Independent News

The Toledo Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash with injuries that occurred today (August 14) at approximately 10:05 a.m.

The accident occurred on the Interstate 475 westbound exit ramp to US 23 northbound in Sylvania Township, Lucas County.

Qualid Maafa, 54, of Indianapolis, Indiana, was driving a 2022 Freightliner commercial truck with a trailer westbound on the Interstate 475 exit ramp to northbound U.S. 23. Maafa was traveling too fast for the curve, lost control of his semi, veered off the left side of the road, struck a railing and overturned. When the semi overturned, it blocked the entire ramp and closed the road.

Maafa sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by medical personnel. He was charged with reckless conduct. Seatbelts and driving under the influence of alcohol do not appear to be factors in this accident and the accident remains under investigation.

Maafa was transporting paper products and the accident does not raise any environmental concerns.

The Interstate 475 westbound exit ramp to US 23 northbound will remain closed while the accident is being investigated.

The patrol was assisted by the Sylvania Township Police Department, Ohio Department of Transportation, Wright's Towing and Recovery and the Sylvania Township Fire Department.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds drivers to always wear their seat belts and never drive while impaired or distracted.
