“Yesterday, police were called to a residence in Carrara on the Gold Coast following a report of a young girl found unconscious by her father,” Detective Acting Inspector Kent Ellis told media on Wednesday.

“Despite all the efforts of her father and the emergency services, the young girl was confirmed dead by the arriving paramedics.

“Investigations were immediately launched and as a result the child’s mother was arrested for murder.”

Ellis said officers were faced with an “extremely disturbing sight.”

“This is one of the most shocking scenes I have witnessed in my 15-year career as a detective,” he added.

The videos

Australian media reports that police are investigating videos Xu posted on TikTok in the hours before she was accused of killing her daughter.

During the clips, Xu reportedly mumbles in Mandarin about Christianity and how “Jesus is the incarnated Son of Man” and the “Trinity” is the “one true God.”

The Courier mail reports that she also told her followers: “The devil Satan told me that he has influence over my soul… is interfering with it.”

“Then he will 100% capture me, take possession of my soul and walk until the end of time,” she added.

Community in shock

The Courier mail It was also reported that neighbors heard Xu's husband, Dr. Yun Wang, screaming after he discovered his daughter's body.

“I just heard him howling. It was the most horrible sound I've ever heard,” said neighbor Tracey Donovan.

“It was a scream that words cannot describe… intense.”

Neighbour Chris Symes had previously told ABC that the situation was “heartbreaking” and that he had only seen the girl on the street a few days ago.

“It's heartbreaking, this shouldn't happen, it's just horrible,” he said.

“People, adults, you can kind of understand, but… a small child. That's terrible.”

Sophie Wang was a fifth-grade student at nearby Emmanuel College and headteacher Dan Brown said her death would have a “profound impact on our school community.”

“Our prayers are with the child's family and friends, and we extend our deepest condolences to all those affected,” Brown said in a letter to parents.

“Words cannot ease the shock and pain of such a tragic loss, but rest assured that our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

The college said Wang was “known for her love and passion for reading and learning and was a high-performing student who excelled in academics.”

“We will always remember Sophie for her kindness, her caring nature and her unwavering positive attitude.

“She participated actively in college life and made significant contributions to extracurricular performing arts programs and enrichment activities.

“Sophie’s legacy at Emmanuel College is one of dedication, compassion and enthusiasm.

“Her valuable contributions to our community will be cherished and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

“We will miss her very much.”
