Richard Six was killed in the accident on I-40 on Thursday evening, while Conner Guthrie was seriously injured.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Late Thursday night, Conner Guthrie was fighting for his life on I-40 after the car he was in was involved in a serious accident.

Knoxville police said it was a single-vehicle crash in which the driver was ejected from his car and later struck by a semi-truck on the highway.

The man killed was 26-year-old Robert Six, Guthrie's best friend.

As Guthrie staggered out of the car, he told his family that he had watched cars drive past him.

“Conner said an Uber driver stopped, looked at him and just sped away,” said Guthrie's mother, Reanna Taylor.

It took a few minutes until Bobby Matthews and his wife drove by and immediately decided to stop and help.

Matthews got out of the car and began stopping traffic while directing other drivers to help block the road while his wife Guthrie immediately rushed to help.

“She took off her shirt and wrapped it around his arm to try to stop the bleeding,” Matthews said.

Taylor said her son is still in the hospital as doctors try to determine whether or not his right arm will need to be amputated, while her mother is just happy that Guthrie is alive.

“If she and the other two hadn’t stopped, my son wouldn’t be here today,” Taylor said.

Thanks to strangers, it appears Guthrie is surviving his injuries, but Taylor said he is still struggling with losing his best friend in the accident.
