Gena Rowlands' son Nick Cassavetes shares fan tributes after her death

Gena Rowlands is remembered by her son Nick Cassavetes following her death at the age of 94.

Rowlands, best known for her roles in A woman under the influence And The notebookdied on Wednesday, August 14, surrounded by family at her home in California, Cassavetes' agent confirmed to PEOPLE. TMZ was the first outlet to report the news.

Following her death, director Cassavetes posted a series of sweet tributes to his late mother in his Instagram stories.

The first post contained a photo of Rowlands in the film Gloria next to the words: “This picture has adorned the walls of all my offices! An incredibly strong and talented woman has left us! Rest in peace, Gena Rowlands!”

A second post by the same fan showed a black and white photo of Rowlands and her late husband, filmmaker John Cassavetes – Nick’s father – in their film Opening night.

John, with whom Rowlands had a son, Nick, and daughters, Alexandra and Zoe, died in 1989 at the age of 59 from complications of liver cirrhosis.

“Another great team reunited! RIP Gena Rowlands,” read the caption of the shared post.

Rowlands and John worked together on 10 films, including Gloria, Opening night, A woman under the influence And Minnie and Moskowitz.

Both 1974 A woman under the influence and 1980s Gloria Rowlands was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her film.

Rowlands remarried in 2012 to retired businessman Robert Forrest.

Nick also posted a story from producer Dajana Gudic, with whom he worked on the film 2023 pulsewho shared a black and white photo of Rowlands in her younger years.

“I never had the chance to meet her but the way she raised her son, my dear friend @paul_smenus, says it all about her. Rest in peace beautiful soul Gena Rowlands,” Gudic wrote, adding a series of white heart emojis to her caption.

In June, Nick said Weekly entertainment that his mother had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's five years ago.

The couple worked together on the 2004 film The notebookwith Nick directing his mother in her role as an older Allie, which became one of her best known roles.
