Lamine Yamal's father stabbed to death: What happened?

La Vanguardia reported late on August 14 that Mounir Nasraoui had been stabbed to death in a parking lot in Mataro, a coastal town north of Barcelona.

The newspaper reported that his condition was serious and that he had been taken to a hospital in Badalona. The Catalan police, Mossos, had launched an investigation.

On August 15, the same newspaper updated its report, saying that three people had been arrested in connection with the incident. Nasraoui suffered two stab wounds. A fourth person, who police were looking for, was later arrested, Sport reported.

Sport, meanwhile, also reported that Nasraoui was “out of danger” in hospital and the family had been informed that he would be moved to a ward to recover. The same report said Lamine Yamal had been able to speak directly to his father on the phone, having chosen not to go to hospital to avoid a media frenzy. He then took part in Barcelona's first-team training and was supported by teammates and club staff.

Why was Lamine Yamal's father attacked?

According to initial reports, an earlier altercation between Nasraoui and a small group of men may have led to the alleged attack.

A video purporting to show Nasraoui in an argument with several people on a residential street has been circulating on social media. The footage shows him apparently being led away from the confrontation by another man.

A second video appears to show police arriving at the scene and two officers asking him to leave the area. He then appears to try to explain to them that he was physically attacked during the altercation.

The Mossos have not yet commented publicly on the incident.

When will Lamine Yamal play next?

Barcelona will begin their 2024/25 La Liga season on Saturday, August 16, against Valencia at Mestalla.
