2 people sentenced to 24 years in prison for drug trafficking worth Ksh 4 million

Two dealers were sentenced to 24 years in prison after they were caught transporting illegal substances worth over Ksh 4 million.

In a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) on Thursday, August 15, 2024, the verdict was announced after a year-long trial before the JKIA courts.

Hussein Otita Wakhayanga and Daniel Gor John were arrested on 22 May 2023 along the Nairobi-Naivasha highway in the flyover area.

According to DCI, the suspects were arrested when their white Toyota Passo with registration number KCS 679P was intercepted by officers of the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU).

“Hussein Otita Wakhayanga and Daniel Gor John were nabbed on 22 May 2023 on the Nairobi-Naivasha highway in the flyover area. Their white Toyota Passo (KCS 679P) was intercepted by officers of the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU). A thorough search revealed seven bags and eight packets full of dry plant materials suspected to be illegal substances,” the statement said.

During a thorough search of the vehicle, officers discovered seven bags and eight packages of dry plant material believed to be controlled substances.

Authorities confirmed that the suspects, along with the seized substances and vehicle, were taken to the DCI headquarters where they were examined. Analysis confirmed that the seized material was hemp. It weighed 161.75kg and had an estimated street value of Ksh 4,852,500.

On 29 May 2023, Wakhayanga and Gor appeared before the JKIA Court, where six witnesses testified during the trial. Their testimony contributed to the conviction of the accused.

The court sentenced both of them to 24 years in prison and a fine of Ksh 50 million. If they fail to pay the fine, they face an additional year in prison.

“This case underlines the DCI's unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking. The public is urged to stay away from such activities as perpetrators will face the full force of the law,” the DCI said.
