King George school bus involved in traffic accident

Twenty-two elementary school students were aboard a bus involved in a three-vehicle crash in King George County on Wednesday afternoon.

During the afternoon graduation from Sealston Elementary, Bus 22 was involved in an accident in the area of Route 3 and Lambs Creek Church Road, said Amanda Higgins, communications coordinator for King George County Schools.

None of the students suffered serious injuries and they were transferred to another bus for transport home.

“Our department head, Sealston Elementary School principal and Sealston Elementary School nurse were on scene with the students and bus driver assisting emergency personnel,” Higgins explained.

Virginia State Police responded to the crash at 4:37 p.m. State Police spokeswoman Jessica Shehan said the school bus was stopped with its stop sign extended and red lights flashing. Additionally, a Ford pickup truck was stopped in the left lane away from the school bus when the driver of a Honda minivan struck the stopped vehicles. Shehan said the driver of the minivan briefly looked away while driving and did not notice the stopped vehicles.

The driver of the minivan was uninjured and is accused of reckless driving and defective tires.

The crash remains under investigation.
