The NFL player from Texas, famous for great catfish and murder

Recently, while talking about how much we are looking forward to football this year, a friend of mine mentioned Chubby Grigg. I had never heard of Chubby and was amazed to find out that he was a professional football player who was famous for more than just football.

This Texas professional football player was allegedly notorious for his schemes and murder.

Chubby Grigg and the NFL

Chubby Grigg was a mountain of a man. He weighed 330 pounds when he signed with the Buffalo Bisons in the AAFC. He played a bit in 1946 but ended up on the bench because of his weight.

He eventually landed with the Cleveland Browns and played for them when they were acquired by the NFL, even playing in the championship game they won against the LA Rams in 1950.

He then played for the Dallas Texans before leaving the NFL.

After his time with the NFL, Chubby moved to the small town of Ore City in Texas. The town's population is now around 1,000. He opened a restaurant there.

Chubby's restaurant was said to be very popular. In fact, it was said to be famous throughout the country for one thing… catfish. I believe that. When it comes to food, I definitely trust the 300-pound former NFL pro.

According to the information I was able to find, Chubby's restaurant lasted about 18 years before he decided to sell it and retire. That was in 1972. By 1976, Chubby was back in the newspapers.

This year, he shot and killed his own son. According to news reports at the time, Chubby shot and killed his 20-year-old son on Halloween night because of his drug abuse.

Newspapers said it was the act of a father who had lost hope

According to this newspaper article, Grigg claimed he actually committed the crime for his son, almost as if it was an act of mercy. He said his son had no ambition, couldn't hold down a job, and only spent his money on marijuana, Valium, and cheap wine.

The jury at the trial was split and Chubby pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He received five years probation.

In October 1983, Chubby Grigg died in Ore City, Texas.
