Greenbrier County man convicted of federal drug charges

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) – A Greenbrier County man was sentenced in federal court today.

Rance Allen Mitchem, 42, of Lewisburg, was sentenced to nine years and two months in prison, followed by four years of probation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of West Virginia.

This came after Mitchem pleaded guilty on November 9, 2023 to possession of 5 grams or more of methamphetamine with intent to resell.

Court documents showed that on July 27, 2022, police executed a search warrant for the apartment where Mitchem was staying.

During this search, 38 grams of methamphetamine, scales, packaging material and a Taurus G2S pistol, caliber .40, were found.

Mitchem was in possession of the seized methamphetamine and an additional 93.1 grams of methamphetamine that police found when Mitchem told them it was in his parked vehicle.

He also admitted that he intended to distribute the methamphetamine and use some of it for himself. Mitchem also told officers that he distributed certain amounts of methamphetamine at least once a week for approximately five months.

At the time of his crime, Mitchem was on probation for first-degree robbery after being convicted in Greenbrier County District Court in 2003. Mitchem robbed a Greenbrier County pharmacy with a sawed-off shotgun and stole oxycodone and hydrocodone pills.
