Inmate found unconscious, dies in Penobscot County Jail

BANGOR – A Penobscot County Jail inmate died early Wednesday morning after being found unconscious in his housing unit.

The man, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, was found by correctional officers at approximately 7:55 a.m.

Correctional facility and on-site medical personnel initiated life-saving measures until Bangor Fire Department personnel arrived on scene.

Despite these efforts, the prisoner did not regain consciousness and was declared dead.

Authorities at the Bangor Police Department and the Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) have been notified in accordance with proper procedures.

Bangor police are leading the investigation into the man's death while MDOC is simultaneously reviewing prison procedures.

Preliminary findings of the investigation suggest that the death was due to a medical or health problem. There is no evidence of criminal or violent activity in connection with the incident.
