Man charged with shooting sleeping father in Oakland

A 20-year-old man has been arrested. He is accused of firing a gun into an Oakland apartment, hitting a sleeping father of two in the head and seriously injuring him.

Damon Roberts, 20, has been charged in connection with the Aug. 1 shooting at a public housing complex. Authorities allege that a ricochet bullet fired by Roberts came from one housing unit and entered another where Run Hua Kuang, 33, was sleeping after finishing his shift as a delivery truck driver.

The bullet went through a wall, the headboard of the bed and then hit Kuang in the head. It exited his left eye. He is still on a ventilator.

Neighbors described Kuang and his family as pleasant neighbors.

“He was a good guy. I saw him when he came home from work,” said a neighbor who previously spoke to KTVU. “I have tears in my eyes now because he was a good guy. I like that family.”

According to a GoFundMe page set up to support the victim and his family, Kuang is the sole breadwinner for his family, which includes his wife of seven years and their two daughters, ages three years and seven months.

He came to the United States from Taishan, China, in 2005 in search of the American dream, family members say.

Although authorities have not yet determined whether the shooting was intentional or accidental, Roberts, a convicted felon, is not allowed to possess a firearm.
