Four people are killed and several others injured in a multi-vehicle accident on the Ohio Turnpike



(PRESS RELEASE) SWANTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Ferzan M. Ahmed, Executive Director of the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, issued the following statement regarding the fatal multi-vehicle crashes that occurred today on the Ohio Turnpike:

“We express our sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. We wish the injured a speedy recovery.

“We also commend the Ohio State Highway Patrol, emergency responders, law enforcement, local safety/medical agencies and Ohio Turnpike personnel for their professionalism and rescue efforts at numerous accident scenes.”

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol:

  • The first crash occurred at approximately 5:34 a.m. near mile marker 48 east in Swanton Township, Lucas County. Four commercial vehicles and one passenger vehicle were involved. The crash resulted in one fatality and three passengers were transported to area hospitals with unknown injuries.
  • The second accident, which occurred at approximately 5:59 a.m. near mile marker 49 eastbound in Fulton Township (Fulton County), involved two commercial vehicles and one passenger car. One of the commercial vehicles was transporting sulfuric acid. The Toledo Fire Department cordoned off a 150-foot-wide safety area around the accident site as a precaution. The accident left two people dead and several injured.
  • The third crash, which occurred at approximately 6:24 a.m. near mile marker 50.8 westbound in Swanton Township, Lucas County, involved two commercial vehicles and three passenger vehicles. The crash resulted in one fatality and several injuries.

The accidents remain under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
