Washtenaw County community celebrates Paul Whelan's release from Russian prison

MANCHESTER, Mich. – Manchester is, in many ways, a faith-rooted community.

For the past five and a half years, they never gave up hope that Paul Whelan would be released. Two weeks ago, their prayers were answered.

Residents gathered at the pavilion in Wurster Park on Wednesday morning (August 15) to express their gratitude.

“This is a confirmation of the principle of faith,” said Charlotte Major, who lives in Manchester.

In Manchester, it is important to be good neighbours.

Two of her neighbors, Whelan's parents, Ed and Rosemary, needed her support.

And they still do.

Neighbors said Ed and Rosemary are currently with Paul in San Antonio, where he is recovering from his incarceration.

“Because his parents are so close and dear to us, having Paul there was like having a family member in prison,” said Manchester Mayor Pat Vailliencourt.

The Manchester Ministerial Association organized the church service, which included prayers and singing.

“We've hung yellow ribbons, we've prayed, we've supported the family that lives here, and we sent cards to Paul when he was in prison. And in this moment, we want to come together as a community and say we're thankful that something wonderful has happened,” said Reverend Susan Hitts of Manchester United Methodist Church.

Organizers collected yellow ribbons to give to a textile artist who will make a gift for the Whelan family. The ribbons were tied around lampposts and trees to remind the community of Whelan's plight.

Some yellow ribbons can still be seen all over the city.

Residents have also made welcome cards for Whelan, which will be delivered to him at a later date.

“What happens next depends on what the family needs. I think we continue to love each other. I know we really feel like we want to celebrate when Paul is ready,” Hitts said.
