Patton Boys Soccer wins season opener at rival Freedom

The Patton boys soccer team opened the season Wednesday night with a 2-1 non-league road win over city rival Freedom in Morganton.

The Panthers built a 2-0 lead by halftime and held on to it until the Patriots scored another goal.

PHS (1-0) scored its first goal in the 22nd minute when Tony Vicente fired the ball into the net after an assist from Noah Krogel. The visitors' second goal came in the last four minutes of the first half when Noah Tallent ran at great speed towards the goal and fired the ball into the corner.

“Good start to the season,” said Patton coach Keith Scott. “For our first game, I was pleased with our possession in the first half as we dominated the game. We had several scoring opportunities in the first half that we missed, while we scored two.”

Gabe Batz, Jacob Batz, Gabino Vasquez and freshman Allen Morales led Patton defensively, along with goalie Isai Jimenez (two saves). The Panthers had more shots on goal than Freedom (13-3) and led in corner kicks 4-3.

The Patriots (1-1) scored their goal through Samuel Quinonez on an assist from David Perez Rodriguez, both sophomores, with nine minutes left.

“We have to work especially hard to stay mentally strong and finish the games,” Scott said.

Madison 3, East Burke 1

The Cavaliers (0-2) lost a non-conference home game in Icard on Wednesday, trailing 1-2 at halftime and conceding another goal after the break.

Anthony Romero scored the goal for EBHS on an assist from Noah Ramsey. Jaydon Fair made five saves for EB's goalie in the loss.

VOLLEYBALL

Freedom 3, West Caldwell 2

The Lady Patriots (1-1) took their first win of the season on Wednesday with an away victory in five sets in Gamewell, winning 21-25, 25-13, 25-27, 25-12 and 15-7.
