Children from VB kidnapped by father injured in accident; 1 dies in hospital: police

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Maryland – A 1-year-old girl who was abducted from a Virginia Beach home along with her two brothers by her father on Wednesday night died Thursday as a result of injuries sustained in a car crash, police said.

The three young children were abducted from the house on Jay Are Court shortly before 9 p.m. by their father, 36-year-old Dana Plummer, who then fled in a black Honda Passport.

Police say Plummer stabbed his ex-wife and 12-year-old stepdaughter to death before kidnapping his children, Zayin Plummer, 7, Zayir Plummer, 5, and Za'riyah, 1. His ex-wife is the mother of the 12-year-old girl and the three abducted children, police added.

According to Maryland State Police, Dana Plummer was also hospitalized following the accident.

About 12 hours after the kidnapping, a citizen who recognized the car from the Amber Alert contacted police. Virginia State Police then attempted to conduct a traffic stop on I-95 in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Plummer failed to stop, leading VSP on a pursuit into Prince George's County, Maryland, where the vehicle collided with two other vehicles and overturned near Exit 7 on I-495, according to Maryland State Police.

Accident in PG County after abduction of children from VB

The Maryland State Police reported on X at around 10:30 a.m. that they were on the scene but were not involved in the chase:

“@mdsp at the scene of an accident in Prince George's Co on the Route 5 ramp off the I-495 outer loop. Driver and three children were transported from the scene to area hospitals. Emergency crew en route to the scene.”

A May 2021 divorce decree between Plummer and his ex-wife, the children's mother, stated that both were on active military duty at the time of the divorce.

According to the ruling, the two agreed on joint custody of two of the children, Zayin and Zayir.

Police Chief Paul Neudigate commented on the tragic situation, saying: “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones who are grieving this morning… This is an unimaginable tragedy and on behalf of the VBPD, I extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this loss.”

According to VBPD, Plummer is facing the following charges in Virginia: two counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit a crime, three counts of child abduction, four counts of inducing a minor to commit a crime, and domestic violence.

The Maryland State Police are leading the investigation into the accident because it occurred on a Maryland highway. Additional charges related to the accident are pending in Maryland.
