World-famous singer dead – devastated friends say: “He was taken too soon”

The music world mourns the loss of famous singer Steve Davislim, who died at the age of 57 after a long illness.

The Australian's cause of death has not yet been confirmed, but his management released a heartfelt statement to his “dear friend”, saying: “It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of our dear friend and great artist Steve Davislim.

“Steve was a man of great humanity and keen intellect who possessed a voice of rare beauty and lightness. One of Australia's most successful international artists, Steve was heard all over the world for over three decades, on the stages of the world's most prestigious opera houses and with the world's leading orchestras and conductors.”

The statement released to Slipped Disc continued: “We are deeply grateful to Simone Young and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Richard Mills and Elizabeth Hill-Cooper and the Victorian Opera, Allanah Dopson and the Tasmanian Chamber Music Festival, and Stefan Cassomenos and the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival for recently giving us the opportunity to hear him again. A great artist who has left us far too soon, but whose performances we cherish and whose many recordings we will continue to cherish.”

Davislim was born in Malaysia in 1967 to an Irish mother and a Chinese father and moved to Australia shortly after his birth, the Mirror reported. The star then settled in Vienna, where he sadly passed away.

During his illustrious career as an opera singer, he worked with some of Australia's most respected conductors, including Simone Young and Sir Charles Mackerras.

As news of his death spread, heartfelt expressions of condolence flooded the internet. Opera Australia shared its grief on social media, stating: “We have received the sad news today that celebrated Australian tenor Steve Davislim has passed away.

“Steve had a fantastic international career, particularly in the opera houses and concert halls of Europe, performing with many of the world's greatest conductors. He was also an amazing recording artist, covering a wide range of repertoire.”

Remembering Steve's outstanding performances, the company added: “Our thoughts are with Steve's family, friends and colleagues.” Soprano Laura Aikin wrote warmly of the late singer: “The opera community has lost a truly wonderful, kind colleague.”

Søren Schuhmacher shared his personal memories: “Steve, among all the colleagues you were one of the kindest and most extraordinary… I loved you!” Soprano Sunhae Im expressed her dismay: “Oh, dear Steve! ! ! It's so hard to believe…”
