Do you remember these famous wins against Wolves? | From the archive | News

On Saturday, Wolves travel to the Emirates Stadium for the next meeting of two classic English clubs and it could be another memorable encounter with the side from Molineux.

The Old Gold have been involved in some great games in our corner of North London over the years, with records broken, heroes created and plenty of closing drama.

With that in mind, we've dug up five famous encounters against Wolves for you to enjoy again:

December 2, 2003
Arsenal – Wolves 5:1

A young team took us effortlessly into the fifth round of the League Cup and one player in particular made history. Jeremie Aliadiere capitalised on a defensive error to give us a first-half lead. But after much of the game it was 1-0, a wave of devastating attacks in the closing stages gave the young Gunners a resounding victory.

Sylvain Wiltord laid the ball out to Nwankwo Kanu, who doubled our lead, before Aliadiere scored his second with a brilliant individual effort. Patrick Vieira played a pass to fellow countryman Wiltord, who slotted under Andy Marshall for the fourth. After conceding a consolation goal from Alex Rae, 16-year-old Cesc Fabregas slotted the ball into an empty net to become our youngest ever goalscorer – a record that still stands today.

26 December 2003
Arsenal – Wolves 3:0

Our dominant December double victory over Wolves saw us return to the top of the Premier League just under three weeks later as our unbeaten bid passed another test. We wasted little time in taking the lead in the 13th minute when Vieira's shot took a cruel deflection off Jody Craddock and flew over Michael Oakes for the opening goal.

The Boxing Day joy continued seven minutes later when our captain capitalised on another Craddock error and Vieira set up Thierry Henry who scored our second goal. Our record goalscorer added even more lustre to the match when he scored the third in the closing stages.

3 April 2010
Arsenal – Wolves 1:0

Nicklas Bendtner kept our title hopes alive when he came off the bench to head in the only goal of the game in injury time. Our injury-ravaged side struggled to find a way past the 10-man Wolves and we seemed destined to drop valuable points in what would have been a frustrating draw before the Dane intervened.

We had wasted a number of good opportunities throughout the match and just when it looked like we would not be able to capitalise on Karl Henry's red card after an hour, Bendtner converted a cross from Bacary Sagna in the 94th minute – much to the relief of everyone at the Emirates Stadium.

February 24, 2022
Arsenal – Wolves 2:1

We strengthened our push into European football with a dramatic last-minute turnaround at the Emirates. Hwang Hee-chan put the in-form visitors ahead in the first half and we struggled to fight back as Bruno Lage's side held firm until the introduction of Nicolas Pepe gave us the momentum we needed.

He turned and finished well to equalise with 10 minutes left. From that moment on, we seemed determined to score a winning goal and we did so five minutes into stoppage time. Pepe was involved again when he found captain Alexandre Lacazette in the box. The Frenchman's cross went past visiting goalkeeper Jose Sa and caused chaos at Emirates.

May 28, 2023
Arsenal – Wolves 5:0

We wrapped up the 2022/23 season with a fitting win over Wolves, with Granit Xhaka scoring his first brace for the club in what turned out to be his farewell game at the Emirates Stadium. The Swiss midfielder needed just 13 minutes of the first half to achieve the feat with two close-range finishes, and Bukayo Saka added a superb third before half-time.

We kept up the pressure in the second half and Gabriel Jesus scored the fourth goal with a header just before the hour mark. With 12 minutes to go, Jakub Kiwior scored his first goal in red and white to cap a remarkable season that saw the Champions League once again return to north London.
