Family searches for answers one year after fatal accident

WOODFORD COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – Alex Creech was always the friend you could count on.

“I know everyone says that, but he really was. Nobody, nobody has anything negative to say about him,” said Jerry Creech, Alex's father.

Alex died in a hit-and-run accident in Lexington on September 14, 2023. The accident occurred at the intersection of South Broadway and Angliana.

Now, almost a year later, the name and face of the man the police believe is responsible for the attack have been released.

“Maybe someone knows this person or someone is helping this person. Hopefully that will get someone to say something.”

Alex's father, Jerry Creech, said he knew they would never get their son back, but he hoped they were finally one step closer to justice.

“Honestly, if he had just stopped that night and said I'm sorry, everything would have been completely different. But to just walk away. To just leave a person you are responsible for lying on the street, that's not right.”

According to Lexington police, 31-year-old Harry McDermott is wanted for fleeing the scene and failure to render aid. However, McDermott has a long criminal record dating back to 2013. Court documents show that a grand jury most recently indicted him on strangulation and kidnapping charges in October 2022.

In December, he was also charged with second-degree false imprisonment and first-degree strangulation. Court documents also show that he was released from prison in August 2023, a month before the accident that took Alex's life.

“It's not just me who has lost my son, which is the worst loss ever. Many people have lost a good friend. He meant a lot to many people.”
