State police investigate fatal crash on I-81 in Cortland County

One person was killed in a car accident on I-81 in Cortland County.

The accident occurred on Thursday, August 15, at around 1:10 p.m. near the Marathon exit.

When state police and other authorities arrived at the scene of the accident, they found that two vehicles were involved.

A preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that MD Sanzid Bin Rashid, 26, of Bronx, NY, was traveling north on Interstate 81 in a Honda SUV.

There were traffic disruptions directly north of the Marathon exit due to construction work.

Rashid was in the right lane when he left the right lane to avoid stopped traffic and moved into the left lane, where he struck a Toyota. Both the Honda and the Toyota left the roadway. The Honda overturned and came to rest on its side.

The driver of the Toyota, a 71-year-old man from New Jersey, did not survive the accident. A passenger in the Toyota, a 70-year-old woman from New Jersey, was taken to Upstate Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Rashid was treated on site. The investigation is ongoing.
