The woman is currently free on bail.

Virginia Makhitha and her co-accused Perpetua Mathapo Makgobela were arrested on Thursday, 1 August, following a tip-off from an e-hailing driver who contacted the Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) about alleged recruitment drives within the SAPS.

The pair were charged with fraud and appeared in the Orlando Magistrates Court on Monday 12 August to make their bail application and were released on R15 000 bail.

The case has been postponed until Tuesday, October 8. The suspects are expected to appear in court shortly.

Fihla said the two women, aged 50 and 55, were involved in a fraudulent plot posing as members of the SAPS. They were arrested after an e-hailing driver tipped off the JMPD about alleged SAPS recruitment drives.

The driver had initially enquired about the recruitment process and after checking through official channels, it was confirmed that no such recruitment took place.

According to Fihla, the driver told officers that a woman claiming to be the captain of the Hawks had contacted him and told him that she could facilitate his application to join the police force if he met certain requirements, including having a high school diploma and a driver's license.

“He said the suspect demanded an upfront payment of R8,000 in cash and instructed the victim to come to the Diepkloof SAPS alone. Realising the potential danger, the officers coordinated their approach with the victim and went to the designated location. When they arrived, three women approached the victim's vehicle and led it to an office on the Diepkloof SAPS premises,” said Fihla.
