A historical legend: Francisco Amighetti

Celebrated for rejecting European traditionalism in favor of bold, surrealist-inspired styles, Amighetti (1907-1998) spearheaded a transformation of Costa Rican art. His extensive body of work—including murals, prints, and paintings—embodies the spirit of the country's cultural and social identity. Amighetti's influence endures, making him an enduring symbol of Costa Rican artistic heritage.

Contemporary Masters: Adrián Arguedas and Miguel Hernández Bastos

While Amighetti's legacy is undeniable, Costa Rica's contemporary art scene is rich with talent that continues to push boundaries. Adrián Arguedas and Miguel Hernández Bastos stand out as two of Costa Rica's most significant artists, each making a unique contribution to the country's evolving art history.

Adrián Arguedas: Finding identity through masquerade and tradition

Born in 1968, Adrián Arguedas is a versatile artist whose work spans a variety of media, including woodcut, engraving, watercolor, and sculpture. At the heart of his work is the exploration of masquerade, examining archetypes and the complexity of human identity. Inspired by his childhood in Barva de Heredia, known for its masked parades, Arguedas reinterprets traditional motifs to explore how people project and conceal their identities. His surreal compositions feature symbolic masks and enigmatic figures, delving into the complexity of human behavior. This work has earned him much critical acclaim, including the Aquileo Echeverría award.

Miguel Hernández Bastos: Capturing the Ephemeral

Miguel Hernández Bastos, born in 1961, is known for his exploration of the fragility of the human form. Using media such as pencil, charcoal and acrylic, Hernández Bastos also uses an unconventional technique in which he burns figures onto canvas using the smoke from an oil lamp. This approach produces ethereal compositions that explore themes such as metamorphosis and the transience of existence. His work, which mixes human and mechanical forms with a haunting delicacy, has been exhibited worldwide, including at the XLVII Venice International Art Biennale, where he represented Costa Rica.

MÍRAME Fine Art: Promoting Costa Rican art on the world stage

By highlighting the work of artists such as Francisco Amighetti, Adrián Arguedas and Miguel Hernández Bastos, MÍRAME Fine Art aims to promote Costa Rican art within the broader Central American art scene and beyond.
