Mother claims she receives death threats because of her children's unique names

A mother who chose unusual names for her children claims she has received death threats from haters.

Crystal Docherty, a 34-year-old mother of four, chose unusual names for her children – one of them was named after a fashion label – because she wanted her little ones to stand out.

Crystal says she was influenced by her Traveller heritage when choosing the names.

However, Crystal says she is being trolled online because of the names she chose for Stinger (9), Solitaire-Dior (7), Shadoramay (6) and Malibu-Alaska (3).

She says strangers told her she was being bullied at school and even claimed she received death threats because of her unusual choice of name.

But Crystal has no regrets and believes that people today should be open to “other names.”

Crystal, a beauty assistant from Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland, said: “I get upset and angry when I'm made fun of for their names. You shouldn't make fun of other people's names. Some names sound funny to other people, but it's up to you to decide what names you like and what you choose.”

Crystal, who is separated from her children's father, named her son Stinger after his great-grandfather Stinger Loveridge, which she said was “an easy decision.”

She got the idea for Solitaire for her first daughter from her grandmother, who had recently seen “Live and Let Die” from the James Bond series, in which a character of the same name appeared.

“The name is also named after the diamond – and I just added Dior because it sounded good,” said Crystal.

She added that “Shadora” means “sacred” in her “gypsy culture” and added “Mai” to make it more unique.

“I think she's the only Shadoramay in the world – I've seen Shadoras and I've seen Mays, but not both together,” Crystal said.

She said her youngest daughter's name was inspired by Malibu Beach after her cousin suggested it.

While people mock her online for her unusual choices – in some cases even with death threats – Crystal defends her decisions.

“In our gypsy culture, people don't have a problem with names like that,” Crystal said. “We don't really socialize outside of our own culture, so when people say my kids are being bullied, it's not true.”
