Buckhannon man arrested after killing dog 'with his bare hands'

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (WDTV) – A Buckhannon man was arrested Friday after killing a Chihuahua at his girlfriend’s home in Philippi.

Colton Day, 20, was arrested after telling police he killed the dog “with his bare hands” and hit him multiple times, court documents show.

Philippi Police responded to the Kelly Terrace Apartments after 911 reported that a dog had been killed in an altercation. When they arrived at the scene, the visibly distraught girlfriend told them that her boyfriend had killed her dog and had locked himself out on the porch.

Police went onto the porch and found Day with blood on his arms. He appeared to be very drunk and was slurring his words, police said.

There was blood all over the porch, on the railing, and on a vehicle under the porch, so police assumed he had pushed the dog off the railing.

According to court documents, police found the dog thrown into the woods with its head crushed.

Day is charged with animal cruelty and is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail. Bail is set at $60,000.
