Vince Vaughn says 'responsible comedy' is boring and wants young filmmakers to be given creative freedom — GeekTyrant

Vince Vaughn isn't a fan of the way major Hollywood studios handle comedies these days. He recently ranted about R-rated comedies and explained why they don't make as many of them as they used to.

In an interview with Variety, Vaughn is asked how easy it was for him to find people who would give him the freedom he was looking for on his project.

He began by saying, “It's a bit like dating, isn't it? Or making new friends. I don't know anyone who says, 'I think it's great when someone makes a character as polite and mature as possible.' They're more likely to think, 'Can we get away with this?'”

He used his film Crashers For example: “I still remember the first filming Crasherswe were great [R-rated]and we did stuff and it was fun because we were almost making a movie for ourselves to be funny and there were no 'parents' around.”

He then goes on to discuss why this is a problem today and why responsible comedy is boring. He said: “I think that's a big problem these days – you have to let the young people make films and leave them alone.”

“They'll figure it out eventually. And part of the fun is meeting people. Like Zahler's stuff. Look at how well it's received, because there's something provocative about it, in the sense that it allows itself to be what it wants to be.

“It's not about offending anyone. As Kurt Vonnegut said, 'If you open a window and try to please everyone, you'll get pneumonia.' I think the things that resonate are always things that at least feel like they're authentic to the piece.”

“They don't try to code it in a way that feels responsible. This feels like a boring celebration to me; a responsible comedy feels like a time to take a nap.”

I agree 100%! When you look at comedies from the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s, you can see that filmmakers really pushed boundaries and did great things in comedy! Many of these films are classics and when you watch them again, people laugh their heads off!

Hollywood doesn't produce comedy classics anymore. Most of them are pretty forgettable these days and that's a shame.
