Lorain Lions prepare for STEPS Walk to fight childhood cancer

The Lorain Lions Club is preparing for its eighth annual STEPS Walk, a community event aimed at raising awareness and vital funds to fight childhood cancer, according to a press release.

The STEPS Walk is part of a larger initiative by the Ohio Lions, the press release said.

Lions clubs across Ohio host STEPS walks or runs throughout September, uniting in their mission to end childhood cancer.

Registration for the Lorain Lions STEPS Walk begins at 9:30 a.m. on September 14, and the event begins at 10 a.m. at Lakeview Park North, 1800 W. Erie Ave. in Lorain.

Participants of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join the Lorain Lions for this one-mile walk. The starting line is located at the west end of Lakeview Park North, the release said.

“We are calling on the entire community to join us and make a real difference,” said Lorain Lion Bob Cobos, chair of the STEPS Walk, in the press release. “The funds raised will directly benefit Ohio families struggling with the financial burdens of childhood cancer treatment, transportation and medications.”

“In addition, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to hospitals that conduct important cancer research.”

According to the Lions Club International Foundation website, one in 285 children in the United States is diagnosed with cancer before age 20, Mitchell Fallis, Lorain Lions spokesman, said in the press release.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and gold is the color chosen to represent this fight, Fallis said.

If you are unable to attend the walk, donations are welcome.

Checks should be made payable to Ohio Lions 13OH2, STEPS Walk, and mailed to Lorain Lions Club, PO Box 298, Lorain, Ohio, 44052.

All donations will be transferred to the Ohio Lions Pediatric Cancer Foundation, the press release said.

The registration fee for the walk is $25.
