“Murder of former Deputy Vice President of Ekiti State University, Prof. Olaofe, is sad and tragic”: EEI laments

  • The Empower Ekiti Initiative (EEI) has denounced the murder of Professor Olorunfemi Olaofe, former Deputy Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU).
  • On July 9, the former university professor was abducted from his residence in Ado-Ekiti along with his security guard and later found dead.

A group, Empower Ekiti Initiative (EEI), has condemned the gruesome murder of former Deputy Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Professor Olorunfemi Olaofe.

EEI expressed its condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and loved ones of the former EKSU don, made some recommendations to the state governor, Biodun Oyebanji, and called for enhanced security measures.

“In recent months, Ekiti State has been affected by increasing insecurity and a disturbing loss of life. The brutal manner of Prof. Olaofe’s abduction and murder is a stark reminder of the urgent need for a comprehensive and effective approach to address these growing security challenges.

“We condemn this heinous act of violence in the strongest possible terms and extend our deepest condolences to Prof. Olaofe's family, friends, colleagues and all who have been touched by his remarkable contributions. His legacy of scientific excellence and commitment to societal progress will forever be remembered and honoured.

“In response to this tragic event, we make the following urgent recommendations to Governor Biodun Oyebanji and the state government to halt the escalating violence and enhance public safety:

“• Strengthening law enforcement: providing additional resources and support to law enforcement agencies to enhance their effectiveness and ensure a rapid and robust response to criminal activities, including kidnapping and murder.

“• Improve surveillance and intelligence gathering: Invest in state-of-the-art surveillance technologies and information systems to better monitor and prevent potential threats and ensure timely intervention in cases of violence and kidnapping.

“• Promoting community policing and engagement: Developing and implementing community policing strategies that promote collaboration between law enforcement and local communities, thereby building trust and cooperation in the fight against crime.

“• Ensuring accountability and justice: Commit to a transparent and thorough investigation into the abduction and murder of Prof. Olaofe and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice and the rule of law is upheld.

“• Support for victims and families: Providing comprehensive support services to families affected by violent crime, including counselling, legal assistance and protection measures.

“• Implement preventive measures: Launch awareness campaigns to educate citizens about crime prevention and the importance of reporting suspicious activities, and promote a culture of vigilance and social responsibility.

“• Strengthening inter-agency cooperation: enabling better coordination and information sharing between different security agencies in order to improve overall effectiveness and efficiency in tackling security challenges, particularly kidnappings and violent crimes.

Bandits kill deputy registrar and others

More news: Legit.ng reported that bandits killed a deputy university registrar and others.

Among the victims was a secondary school principal, Samuel Mbapuun, who was reportedly on his way to his new school. Daily Trust reported that the deceased was being transferred from a secondary school in Takum to another secondary school in Wukari Local Government Area of ​​the state.

The university lecturer was on his way back to Wukari after spending the weekend with his family in Takum. Mbapuun was travelling with other passengers when the armed men with guns and machetes came out of the bush to attack them, Leadership reported.

How the former ABSU deputy VC was kidnapped

In the meantime, Legit.ng previously reported how the former deputy chancellor of Abia State University was kidnapped by armed men.

According to The Nation, the gunmen ambushed the professor and his wife after they left a petrol station in Umuekwu, Amachara, in Umuahia South Local Government Area. The criminals allegedly took his wife's bank card and forcibly dragged the deputy principal into a Lexus SUV with which they fled the scene.

Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said the kidnapping incident occurred on a Friday at about 7:30pm. Chinaka explained that the police received official information about the incident at about 9:30pm, The Punch reported.
