The man accused of driving the wrong way on I-215 after a police chase and robbery has been taken into custody.

Maxwell Brandon Archibald was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and using, carrying, brandishing and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a violent crime, charging documents say.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. Unified Police officers were dispatched to the Maverick near 7360 S Union Park Ave.

When they arrived at the scene, a detective from UPD's Violent Crimes Unit was speaking to a man who had been shot.

The victim told officers that an argument had broken out between a friend and a man named Archibald over who would drive the friend's car.

The victim said the friend wanted to drive the car because it belonged to him, but Archibald became “increasingly angry.” A physical altercation then ensued between the victim and Archibald, charging documents say.

Archibald reportedly pulled out a firearm and attempted to shoot the victim, but the victim managed to knock the gun away just before it went off.

The victim said Archibald shot him again, this time in the arm.

The indictment states that the victim and his friend then fled while Archibald took the car.

Investigators spoke with the friend, who allegedly confirmed the argument. The friend also said they saw Archibald waving the gun around and explained that's why they ran away and called the police.

Police attempted to stop Archibald, but according to the indictment, he fled, leading to a chase.

One time, Archibald was driving the wrong way on I-215.

Archibald was eventually taken into custody and the firearm was recovered despite Archibald's alleged attempts to discard it.

Investigators later learned that another person was involved in the incident: Archibald’s cousin.

In an interview, the cousin reportedly told investigators that he was walking around and noticed Archibald in a car.

He got into the car and said a moment later the police came after him.

The cousin said Archibald did not stop even when asked to.
