Murder suspect charged with attack on fellow inmate at Minot prison

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – A man scheduled to stand trial in Minot next month on murder charges now faces separate charges after investigators say he attacked a fellow inmate in the jail with an improvised weapon.

Kamauri Kennedy faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a weapon by an inmate.

According to the criminal affidavit, investigators said Kennedy, 35, struck a male inmate several times with a metal fragment late Thursday night, causing injuries to the back of the head and arms.

In the affidavit, officials said the confrontation was seen on video surveillance equipment and that investigators determined from communication between Kennedy and another person via a prison texting device that the incident was intentional.

The victim was treated at the hospital and released. Kennedy will make his first appearance on the new charges on Monday.

He is in prison on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the 2021 killing of 33-year-old Domonique Kelly of Minot.

Kelley's body was found in a burned-out vehicle in Minot in June 2021. Kennedy was found months later in Macomb County, Michigan, after leading authorities there on a high-speed chase.

Kennedy was scheduled to stand trial for murder in April, but the case was postponed after it was announced shortly before the trial was due to begin that an evidentiary case needed to be investigated.

The affidavit in this case is sealed.
