Governor Ron Desantis says Florida's tourism surge is thanks to “freedom” and “sensible leadership”

Walt Disney World Resort recently made a series of major announcements that will soon transform all of its theme parks, most notably the iconic Magic Kingdom Park, which was planned by Mr. Disney himself. Recent announcements of significant changes to Disney's Magic Kingdom Park have raised concerns that the park is straying from its traditional American themes. At the center of the debate is the planned redesign of Frontierland, a section of the park known for its homage to American frontier history.

The upcoming redesign will replace the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island with a new area that is based on Disney’s Cars franchise. This change aims to introduce attractions inspired by the popular animated series, causing concern among some that the park is dismantling its historical and cultural elements in favor of more contemporary themes. Disney's plans to redesign Frontierland have drawn mixed reactions from fans, who argue that the changes undermine the park's historical significance.

Frontierland, known for its authentic depiction of the American frontier and western charm, has long been a symbol of Disney's celebration of American history and exploration. Some see the move to a new area inspired by the “Cars” franchise as a departure from the traditional celebration of American heritage. Critics say replacing a cherished historical section with a commercially focused attraction could weaken the patriotic and cultural elements that are essential to the park's identity.

As millions of fans deal with the blow of Disney attempting to remove any form of “Americana” from its Orlando theme parks, Ron DeSantis is making a commitment to America and freedom in his latest speech. Tourism in Florida has increased, giving the state an ecumenical boost in his fourth-quarter report. On Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis emphasized the state's commitment to “freedom” and “sensible leadership” and celebrated record tourism numbers for the second quarter of 2024.

“Florida is firmly establishing itself as the premier tourist destination,” DeSantis said in a statement. “The remarkable numbers we are seeing reflect our commitment to public safety, individual freedoms and pragmatic governance, which together increase Florida's attractiveness as a tourist destination.”

According to data from VISIT FLORIDA, Florida welcomed 34.2 million visitors in the second quarter of 2024, up 1.7% year over year. Orlando International Airport, the main gateway to major attractions such as Disney World and Universal Studios, was the state's busiest airport during that period.

The state also saw an increase in the number of international travelers. “Florida remains a top choice for both domestic and international tourists,” said Dana Young, president and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA. “This success reflects the governor's freedom-focused policies, our strategic marketing initiatives and Florida's inherent appeal. We will continue to build on our strengths to ensure Florida remains at the forefront of global travel destinations.”

In addition, demand for hotels increased by 1% compared to the same quarter in 2023. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently emphasized the state's commitment to “freedom” and “sensible leadership” when announcing the record-breaking tourism numbers. DeSantis praised Florida as a top travel destination and attributed its success to policies that prioritize public safety and personal freedoms.

He described these principles as central to Florida's appeal, underscoring a broader narrative of defending traditional values and American ideals. In contrast, Disney's recent plans to expand its theme parks have sparked debate about their impact on American heritage. Critics see the move as potentially undermining the patriotic and historical elements that have long been part of Disney's identity.
