Around 100 firefighters battle blaze at London's famous Somerset House | UK news

Around 100 firefighters are battling a fire at London's famous Somerset House on The Strand.

The London Fire Brigade reported on X that 15 fire engines were at the scene.

It was said that the fire broke out in the roof and two 32-metre-long ladders from the brigade were sent to assist in the operation.

Videos and images on social media showed a small section of a roof on fire and smoke rising over the Thames.

“The brigade's operational commanders received over ten calls reporting the fire, the first of which came in at 11:59 a.m.,” the statement added.

“Teams from Soho, Dowgate, Islington and surrounding fire stations are on site.”

Firefighters said the cause of the fire is currently unknown.

A breakdancing day was supposed to take place at Somerset House on Saturday, but the house is now closed due to firefighting.

In a statement, Somerset House said: “Somerset House is currently closed due to a fire that has broken out in a small part of the building.

“All employees and the public are safe and the site is closed.

“The London Fire Brigade arrived quickly and we are working very closely with them to bring the fire under control.”

Somerset House on the banks of the River Thames was once a royal palace and is now an arts, culture and entertainment centre.

The Courtauld Gallery, home to one of the world's greatest art collections, is located in the north wing of the building and contains works by artists such as Vincent van Gogh.

The site of Somerset House dates back to 1547 and has survived the Great Fire of London, the Civil War and more.

Michelle Birkby, 50, who lives in London, said: 'I was walking along the south bank of the riverbank, could smell smoke, looked up and saw smoke rising from the roof of Somerset House.

“At first I thought it was a barbecue in the courtyard or some kind of event, but then I heard the fire engines and I realised that the smoke was rising uncontrollably and that Somerset House was on fire.

“I visit this place quite often and I know it's beautiful. I really hope they can stop the fire before it does too much damage.”
