Gege Akutami admitted that Jujutsu Kaisen lacks what made Tite Kubo's Bleach so famous

Anime and manga fans often have Gege Akutamis Jujutsu Kaisen and Tite Kubos bleaching because of the parallels that the two series have to each other. These parallels and similarities are the result of Akutami's inspiration from Kubo and the use of references from bleaching to create the narrative of Jujutsu Kaisen and its characters.

These inspirations in Jujutsu Kaisen certainly helped the series to make a big name for itself. The only thing Akutami could not draw inspiration from, however, was Kubo's way of drawing female characters, which were mainly tailored to male readers and viewers. These female characters from bleaching were often part of controversies and brought some fame to the series.

Akutami once admitted that they do not have the talent to draw good female characters, which is why they deliberately focus on only one type of female characters. They even pointed out that the Jujutsu Kaisen Fan base will not favor the female characters who have similarities with Bleaching.

Gege Akutami admits that they fail to draw female characters

A special interview between Akutami and Kubo, which was published in the Jujutsu Kaisen official fanbook translated by Edomonogatari revealed that Akutami preferred to avoid female characters. The reason for this was that the mangaka could not draw female characters as well as other manga creators.

Akutami explained:

No, I'm just avoiding the subject… I know I can't draw women, so I stopped creating so-called “ladylike” characters.

Although Jujutsu Kaisen features a decent cast of female characters who don't fall into the traditional shonen stereotype and generally belong to the same category. They are more involved in the violent elements of the series compared to the female characters from other series.

The greatest example of this is Tite Kubo, who portrayed the female characters in bleaching for alleged fanservice and portrayed different types of female characters for different narratives. This has also drawn bleaching and Kubo in numerous controversies, especially with regard to the women in the story.

Gege Akutami can't name her favorite female character

Given the fan base of the female characters in Jujutsu Kaisenone can assume that Akutami portrayed them quite well. However, the mangaka never thought of choosing any of them as his favorite. They focus more on the main characters and also try to draw the viewer's attention to the narrative rather than these things.

Akutami explained:

Well, it's not that I have a particular preference for any archetype. If you asked me what my favorite female characters were, I'd freeze. Besides, I don't know if readers even want to see ladylike or seductive female characters from me.

Gege Akutami has increasingly focused on the storylines and actions of Jujutsu Kaisen. They tried to make it interesting and complex, and maybe that's one of the reasons why they don't want the audience to be distracted by such aspects.

But that doesn’t change the fact that Akutami could have given the female characters more action in Jujutsu Kaisenespecially Nobara, who died before the final battle could even begin.

From August 17, 2024, you can Jujutsu Kaisen on Crunchyroll and bleaching on Hulu.
