Mother and son arrested after teen brings gun to CHS

A Columbus High School student and his mother are facing minor misdemeanor charges after the student allegedly brandished a firearm on campus Friday afternoon.

According to a press release from Columbus Police, 40-year-old Sherita Shunta Baker and the teenager are charged with simple assault with intent to intimidate. The teenager is also accused of possessing a weapon on school grounds.

A fight broke out between two male students at the football stadium on Friday afternoon, the press release said. The mother of one of the students picked him up after the fight, but the mother and son later returned to campus.

Witnesses said when another student said something to the juvenile suspect, he lifted his shirt and a gun was visible.

A Facebook post from the Columbus Municipal School District confirming the incident said coaches responded quickly and no one was injured. Police arrived around 4:30 p.m.

Baker was taken to the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. The arrested student's case will be handled in juvenile court.
