Dallas shooting: Documents show victims helped identify murder suspect at Red Bird gas station

A shooting near a Dallas gas station that left one man dead and four others injured began when a group of people tried to wake up a sleeping motorist, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by FOX 4.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of July 27 near a Texaco gas station on Laureland Road in the Red Bird neighborhood.

According to the affidavit, a group of six friends tried to leave the gas station parking lot after a bar closed, but were unable to do so because the driver of a black Audi was passed out behind the wheel and blocking the exit.

Surveillance video footage shows two suspects approaching the group from behind and opening fire as they walked to the car to wake the driver. Another suspect next to a truck also began shooting, police said.

Three men and two women were shot multiple times.

Cartridge cases of three different calibers were found at the crime scene.

One of the victims, 28-year-old Devon Lewis, later succumbed to his injuries.

According to the affidavit, some of the victims said they knew one of the shooters but did not know his name.

The documents say the victims told police that the man they knew as “Malcolm” approached them earlier that evening and greeted them.

Based on information from the victims, police were able to identify the shooter as 28-year-old Dantae Brooks.

Brooks was arrested and faces several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and murder.

Dallas police are still searching for several other suspects in connection with the shooting.
