Although Alfred served the Waynes for years in numerous versions of the DC Universe, the latest version of the character tragically lost his life at Bane's hands during the events of 2019. Batman #77 by Tom King, Mikel Janin and Tony S. Daniel. This happened after he was taken hostage by the villain who had been waging a terror campaign against the Dark Knight for months. Alfred was originally meant to be a bargaining chip to ensure the Batman Family stayed out of Bane's way. When Damian tried to intervene, Bane snapped Alfred's neck right in front of the Boy Wonder, making good on his previous threats without hesitation.

Not too long after, Bane himself was presumably killed in a massive attack on Arkham Asylum, where he was then imprisoned alongside dozens of other iconic Batman villains. Somehow, Bane not only managed to escape with his life, but also crossed halfway across the world before ending up in self-imposed exile on Dinosaur Island. There, Bane has tested his mettle against all manner of prehistoric beasts while keeping the island free of invaders who are after the greatest game the Earth has to offer.
