Pierce County man charged with kidnapping, making death threats against teen

A Pierce County man is accused of kidnapping a 15-year-old boy, forcibly dragging him into his car and shooting the teen's boyfriend Monday night.

According to court documents obtained by FOX 13, Pierce County Sheriff's officers were called to 152nd Street Court East and Brookdale Road East near Frederickson for a reported kidnapping.

Documents show a woman called 911 and said she saw a man in an older white vehicle stop on the street and fire two shots before grabbing a person and throwing them into his car.

“He shot at them, got out of his vehicle and arrested one of them at gunpoint,” said Sergeant Darren Moss of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department. “He forced one of them into his vehicle while verbally threatening to kill them and drove away. Before he did that, he pointed his gun at his wife, who had nothing to do with anything.”

According to prosecutors, the teen's boyfriend also called 911. Court documents detail that the teen told 911 dispatchers the two were playing “Ding Dong Ditch” when an unknown man pulled up next to them, shot them and forced the boyfriend to get into his car.

Court documents identified the driver as Brian Jones Canady.

When officers arrived on the scene, they spoke to witnesses and found bullet casings on the street.

Pierce County investigators have received information about an armed kidnapping of a man and a 15-year-old boy

“While they were investigating, they received another emergency call,” said Sergeant Moss. This time it was from the neighborhood. It was about a vehicle that was wandering around the area.”

The caller allegedly identified himself as Canady and said he caught a teenager in his car.

It was a completely different story than the one that investigators later pieced together.

Prosecutors wrote that Canady matched the description of the suspected shooter from the earlier call and that officers brought a witness to identify him.

He was arrested after clear identification.

“We heard all the commotion,” said one of Canady's neighbors, who asked not to be identified. “We also heard a lot of screaming.”

Documents show that the teenager admitted he was with his boyfriend and doing “something shady” when Canady arrived to confront her.

The teenager said Canady pointed a gun at him, told him to get in the car and drove him to his house, where he told him he was going to kill him but then changed his mind.

FOX 13 spoke to a neighbor who saw the teen lying on the ground while Canady stood over him.

“I saw him right here,” said neighbor Devon King. “He had left the little boy lying there. He said, 'Oh, he broke into my car, he broke into my car.' All his stuff was lying in the street.”

King told FOX 13 he never saw a gun.

“I thought he had caught someone committing a crime,” King said.

According to the documents, Canady told officers a different version of the incident.

He claims he caught the teens in his car and they tried to escape, so he chased them in his car, grabbed the 15-year-old and called 911.

Canady denied that a weapon was involved, but officers reportedly found a gun on his kitchen counter while executing a search warrant.

Court records show he was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, false imprisonment, harassment with a threat to kill and first-degree illegal possession of a weapon.

His bail was $50,000.

Canady has since been released from jail on bail. When FOX 13 knocked on his door to get his side of the story, he was unavailable for comment.
