22-year-old receives 30 years in prison after fatal Arlington shooting over telephone

According to the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office, a 22-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to a shooting in 2022 over a dispute over cell phones.

Jacob Yi was arrested in February 2022 on charges of murder, aggravated assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Yi shot and killed Tyshawn James Groves, 31, of Haslet, after Groves asked Yi to buy iPhones for him at an AT&T store on South Cooper Street.

According to the arrest warrant, Groves promised to pay Yi for his share of the purchase.

After purchasing the phones and being paid for by Groves, Yi attempted to flee with the phones and Groves' debit card, according to Arlington police. When Groves confronted him, Yi shot him multiple times, killing him.

A 29-year-old man who was with the victim was also shot and hid behind a pillar after being shot. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Police did not disclose why Groves offered Yi money to buy the iPhones for him.
