Two people die and two are injured in shooting in Oakland, California

OAKLAND, California – According to San Francisco Bay Area police, two people were shot and two others injured following a verbal altercation on Saturday morning.

Shortly after 9 a.m., officers were called to the 1600 block of 83rd Avenue in a residential area of ​​East Oakland and found four victims with gunshot wounds, Oakland police said in a statement.

Two of the victims died at the scene and two others were taken to hospital, the police statement said.

Several people were involved in a verbal argument that turned fatal when one of the perpetrators pulled out a firearm and fired several shots before fleeing the scene in a vehicle, police said.

Police are not releasing the names of the victims until next of kin are notified.

Oakland is a city of 400,000 residents that struggles with crime and public safety.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao faces recall in November, as does the county's district attorney, Pamela Price.

The home where Thao lives with her partner and son was raided by the FBI in June as part of an investigation that also included searches of other homes belonging to a politically well-connected family that owns a recycling business.

Thao said she did nothing wrong.
