Jaipur Medical Community holds protest march after tragic death of Calcutta doctor

On August 9, doctors in Jaipur held a protest march against the murder and alleged sexual assault of their colleague at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

On Saturday, protesting doctors carried placards and banners and chanted slogans such as “Save those who save you” and “Justice delayed is justice denied” to express their anger and demand better safety laws for medical staff.

Also in the state of Odisha, Koraput, the Nursing Employee Association held a protest rally on August 17 in response to the incident.

The alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor has sent shockwaves across the country, with doctors organising protests in several cities, including Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai.

Following an order of the Calcutta High Court, the case was handed over by the state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Earlier, on August 9, a junior doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, triggering nationwide strikes and protests within the medical community.

On August 14, the protest site and RG Kar hospital premises were vandalised by a mob, after which security forces dispersed the crowd.

In the wake of ongoing protests, the Kolkata Police imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC) around the Medical College and Hospital for seven days with effect from August 18.
