On August 16, the New Jersey Attorney General's office released shocking footage of the July 28 fatal shooting.

At around 1:25 a.m., police responded to a call from 25-year-old Victoria Lee's brother asking for help with his sister's mental breakdown.

Lee, who suffered from bipolar disorder, threatened her family with a knife and screamed when police arrived at the apartment.

In footage shot by Officer Tony Pickens Jr., viewers can see officers arriving at Lee's house and knocking on the door.

Lee's brother left the apartment to greet the police when they asked him: “Who has the knife?”

“Who is struggling with a mental health crisis? Who is having a nervous breakdown?” Pickens also asked.

Her brother hesitantly said that his sister was the one inside with the pocket knife, threatening his mother and dog.

Pickens told his brother to step aside and was about to open the door when Lee's mother screamed, “Don't come in.”

Lee also yelled, “Shut the damn door,” as she slammed the apartment door. Pickens continued knocking and asking to be let in as backup officers arrived on the scene.

“I’m going to kick down the door,” he warned Lee.

“Just do it and I’ll stab you in the damn neck,” Lee yelled back.

“Shoot me if you want.”

A second officer replied, “We don’t want to shoot you.”

“We would like to speak to you.”

The officers continued to warn Lee that they would break down the door if they were not allowed in, saying that normally they would wait longer to be let in, but since her mother was in the house with her, they had to go in.

The statement from the Lee family’s lawyer

“Victoria was a loved one with a bright future and her loss is immeasurable,” said Henry Cho, the family’s attorney.

“The Lee family is determined to seek justice and ensure the full truth about this tragic event comes to light.

“The police reacted aggressively, forced their way into the apartment and shot Victoria, who was holding a plastic water jug. She was harmless.

“The pain and grief our family is experiencing is indescribable. Victoria was a bright and loving person with a promising future and her untimely death has left a void that can never be filled.”

Pickens began slamming the door while other officers warned Lee that they were going to break in. When the door opens, Lee's mother is seen holding Lee's left hand.

“Drop the knife,” several officers shouted.

Instead of dropping the knife, Lee appeared to walk toward the police officers and threw a jug of water at them with the hand that did not contain the weapon.

As she left the apartment, Pickens fired a shot directly into her chest.

As Lee fell to the ground, a scream erupted and officers rushed to her aid to try to stop the bleeding.

Lee's mother asked in Korean if her daughter was OK, and the 25-year-old could be heard gasping as she said, “I can't breathe.”

Lee was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m., about half an hour after officers arrived at her home.

The attorney general said the shooting was still under investigation.

Request for justice

Lee's family held a press conference on August 16 about their daughter's death, claiming she was not carrying a weapon.

“The police reacted aggressively and forcibly entered the apartment and shot Victoria, who was holding a plastic water jug. She was harmless,” said Henry Cho, the family's lawyer.

“The pain and grief our family is experiencing is indescribable. Victoria was a bright and loving person with a promising future and her untimely death has left a void that can never be filled.”
